InclusivePay has been placing CBD merchants since 2018. This guide reflects what we’ve seen work — and what blows up — across hundreds of Shopify CBD setups.

So you want to sell CBD on Shopify. Good choice on the platform — Shopify is genuinely one of the best ecommerce setups for CBD brands. Flexible, well-supported, and it doesn’t ban CBD at the platform level.
Here’s the catch: Shopify Payments does. And if you’re using Shopify Payments right now — even if everything looks fine — you’re one algorithm update away from frozen funds and a terminated account. We’ve seen it happen to brands doing $50K/month and brands doing $500K/month. The store isn’t the problem. The payment layer is.
This guide walks you through exactly how to set up CBD payment processing on Shopify the right way: what to disable, what to connect, what you need to get approved, and how to keep your account stable long-term.
Can You Sell CBD on Shopify?
Yes — with conditions. Shopify’s platform policy allows hemp-derived CBD products as long as merchants follow applicable laws and Shopify’s own guidelines. That means:
- Products must be hemp-derived with 0.3% THC or less (Farm Bill compliant)
- No disease treatment claims — “cures anxiety,” “treats pain,” “medical-grade” will get you flagged
- Accurate labeling and current COAs must be accessible on your site
- You must comply with state laws in the states where you’re selling
Shopify won’t shut your store down for selling compliant CBD. But Shopify Payments will shut your payment processing down — and that’s a more painful problem. Let’s talk about why.
The Shopify Payments Problem (This Is the One That Catches Everyone)
Shopify Payments is Shopify’s built-in payment solution. Looks convenient, it’s the default when you set up your store, and it’s fine for most businesses. But it runs on Stripe infrastructure — and Stripe explicitly prohibits CBD in its acceptable use policy.
This is the trap. Shopify Payments approves you instantly with no underwriting. Your store goes live, you start processing, everything looks great for a few weeks or months. Then Stripe’s risk algorithms detect CBD in your product descriptions and your account gets flagged. No human reviews it. No warning. Account frozen, funds held for 90 to 180 days, possible MATCH list placement.
| Real consequence: Funds held by Stripe or Shopify Payments after termination typically take 90–180 days to release. You cannot withdraw, cannot process new sales, and may be placed on the MATCH list — a database of terminated merchants that follows you for five years and makes future approvals much harder. |
The other thing worth knowing: this isn’t a gray area. Stripe’s terms of service list CBD explicitly as a prohibited business type. It doesn’t matter how compliant your products are. The category is banned, full stop. See our guide to what happens when Stripe or PayPal shuts you down for the full picture.
How to Actually Set Up CBD Payment Processing on Shopify
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to leave Shopify. You just need to swap out the payment layer. Here’s exactly how it works.
Step 1: Disable Shopify Payments
Go to Settings → Payments in your Shopify dashboard and remove Shopify Payments. Do this before you start selling CBD. If you’re already selling CBD with Shopify Payments active, do this immediately.
Step 2: Get approved for a dedicated CBD merchant account
This is the core of the setup. A dedicated merchant account is individually underwritten by a U.S. acquiring bank that has reviewed your business and agreed to support CBD before your first transaction. That prior agreement is what makes the account stable. InclusivePay places CBD merchants with domestic acquiring banks and can get most merchants pre-approved in 24–48 hours. See our full guide to CBD payment processing for how underwriting works.
Step 3: Connect via a third-party gateway
Shopify supports third-party gateways under Settings → Payments → Third-party providers. The two that work best for CBD on Shopify are Authorize.Net and NMI. Both integrate cleanly with Shopify checkout. InclusivePay sets up the full stack — merchant account plus gateway. See our WooCommerce and Shopify CBD gateway guide for full setup details.
Step 4: Test before you launch
Run a test transaction through your new gateway before going live. Confirm the checkout flow works, the payment descriptor looks correct, and your COAs are accessible on the site. Underwriters do ongoing website reviews — a broken checkout or missing compliance page can trigger a mid-account review.

Shopify Payments vs. Dedicated CBD Merchant Account
| Feature | Shopify Payments (Stripe) | InclusivePay |
| CBD allowed? | No — prohibited in ToS | Yes, with proper documentation |
| Underwriting | None — auto-approved instantly | Full, before first transaction |
| Account stability | Frozen without warning | Stable, long-term |
| Funds held on termination | 90–180 days | Not applicable |
| Shopify integration | Native (but banned for CBD) | Via Authorize.Net or NMI |
| Volume cap | $5K–$20K/month typical | $100K+/month |
| Chargeback support | None | Monitoring and prevention tools |
| Approval time | Instant (then terminated later) | 24–48 hrs pre-approval |
What You Need to Get Approved
Getting approved for a CBD merchant account isn’t complicated if you come prepared. Here’s what you’ll need:

- Business registration documents — LLC, EIN, articles of incorporation
- Government-issued ID for all owners with 25%+ ownership
- 3–6 months of business bank statements
- Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for every product — third-party lab, Delta-9 THC at or below 0.3%, within 12 months
- Product labels for all active SKUs
- Your Shopify store URL — underwriters review your site before approving
That last one matters more than most merchants realize. Underwriters look at your product pages, your claims, and your checkout flow. Remove any language that could read as a health claim — “reduces inflammation,” “supports sleep,” “helps with anxiety” — before you apply. A clean site means faster approval.
Approval timeline: With InclusivePay: pre-approval in 24–48 hours for most CBD merchants. Fully live with your Shopify gateway connected in 5–7 business days.
Keeping Your Shopify CBD Account Stable
Getting approved is step one. Here’s what keeps you approved long-term:
- Keep chargebacks below 1%. Visa and Mastercard flag merchants above 1% for monitoring. For Shopify CBD stores, a clear product description, visible return policy, and recognizable billing descriptor eliminate most disputes before they start. Aim for 0.8% or below.
- Keep your COAs current. Underwriters do ongoing site reviews. An expired COA (older than 12 months) can trigger a compliance flag mid-account. Set a calendar reminder when each product’s COA is due for renewal.
- Don’t add new product categories without checking. Adding delta-8, hemp flower, or ingestibles to a topicals-only account changes your risk profile. Run new product additions by your processor before they go live.
- Tell your processor before volume spikes. A sudden 3x volume jump looks like fraud to automated risk systems even when it’s a legitimate campaign. Give InclusivePay a heads-up before a big sale or ad push.
- Keep your site compliant after approval. A new blog post with health claims or an updated product description with treatment language can trigger a review even if your original application was spotless.
FAQs
Can I sell CBD on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify allows hemp-derived CBD products as long as they’re Farm Bill compliant (0.3% THC or less), properly labeled, and sold in states where CBD is legal. What you can’t do is use Shopify Payments — that runs on Stripe, which explicitly bans CBD. You need a third-party gateway connected to a dedicated CBD merchant account.
Does Shopify Payments work for CBD?
No. Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe, and Stripe prohibits CBD in its acceptable use policy. Accounts processing CBD through Shopify Payments will eventually be flagged and terminated — funds held 90–180 days, possible MATCH list placement. Disable Shopify Payments before you start selling CBD.guide to what to do after a Stripe or PayPal shutdown.
What payment gateway works with Shopify for CBD?
Authorize.Net and NMI are the two most reliable gateways for CBD on Shopify. Both integrate via Shopify’s third-party payment provider option under Settings → Payments. You’ll need a dedicated CBD merchant account behind the gateway — the gateway is just the connection layer. InclusivePay sets up the full stack. See our WooCommerce and Shopify CBD gateway guide for a full breakdown of gateway options.
How long does Shopify CBD merchant account approval take?
With InclusivePay, pre-approval typically comes within 24–48 hours for most CBD merchants. Full setup with your Shopify gateway live is usually 5–7 business days, assuming your documentation is in order. The most common delay is incomplete COAs or a website with health claims that need to be cleaned up first.
What if I was already using Shopify Payments for CBD?
Disable it immediately and apply for a dedicated merchant account before processing another transaction. If your Shopify Payments account has already been flagged or frozen, don’t apply to another aggregator — that can worsen your MATCH list risk. Apply through a specialist like InclusivePay who does real underwriting for CBD. See our guide to what to do when Stripe, PayPal, or Square shuts you down for the full step-by-step.
Can I use Square with Shopify for CBD?
Not natively — Square is not a standard Shopify payment gateway. There’s a workaround integration available, but for most Shopify CBD sellers a dedicated merchant account via Authorize.Net or NMI is more reliable and simpler to maintain. See our Square CBD processing guide for the full picture on Square’s CBD program and its limitations.
Do I need a COA to sell CBD on Shopify?
Yes — both for Shopify’s platform compliance and for your payment processor’s underwriting. You need a Certificate of Analysis from a third-party lab for every product, confirming Delta-9 THC at or below 0.3%, dated within the last 12 months. Missing or expired COAs are the most common reason CBD merchant account applications are delayed or denied.
Does InclusivePay support Shopify?
Yes. InclusivePay integrates with Shopify via Authorize.Net and NMI — both supported as third-party gateways in Shopify’s payment settings. You keep your storefront, product catalog, and checkout flow entirely. We handle the merchant account placement and gateway setup. Most CBD merchants are fully live in 5–7 business days. See our CBD payment processing page for full details on how the setup works.
What about peptide or supplement sellers on Shopify?
Same situation — Shopify Payments (Stripe) bans peptides and supplements with health-adjacent claims just as it bans CBD. The fix is the same: dedicated merchant account, third-party gateway. InclusivePay works with peptide and nutraceutical merchants on Shopify. See our peptide merchant account page and nutraceutical merchant account page for details.

The Bottom Line
Shopify is a great platform for CBD. The storefront, the inventory tools, the app ecosystem — all of it works. What doesn’t work is Shopify Payments, and that’s where most CBD brands run into trouble.
The fix isn’t complicated. Disable Shopify Payments. Get a dedicated CBD merchant account. Connect via Authorize.Net or NMI. Your store stays exactly the same — you just stop running your revenue through a platform that’s going to eventually shut you down.
