CBD & Hemp Payment Processing

CBD Payment Processing for Hemp and CBD Brands

You built a legitimate CBD brand. Your products are compliant, your COAs are current, your labels are clean. But Stripe, PayPal, or Square just froze your account — or you’re launching and want to get the setup right before that happens.

Quick Answer

InclusivePay is a U.S.-based ISO — an Independent Sales Organization — with direct relationships with domestic acquiring banks that specialize in CBD, hemp, and alternative health verticals.

We have been placing CBD and hemp brands since 2018. One topical CBD client has processed over $6M with us across 5+ years — chargeback rate under 0.8%, never frozen.

The problem

Why CBD Payment Processing Is Different

CBD is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill for hemp-derived products with 0.3% THC or less. That has not changed. What has also not changed is that Stripe, PayPal, Square, and WooPayments explicitly prohibit CBD in their terms of service — and they enforce it aggressively.

These platforms are payment aggregators, not real processors. They approve your account instantly without underwriting your business, then monitor transactions with automated risk algorithms. When those algorithms detect CBD keywords, your account gets flagged. There is no human review, no warning, and no appeal.

Your funds get frozen for 90 to 180 days. In some cases you end up on the MATCH list, a terminated merchant database that makes future approvals harder for up to five years. This is not a compliance failure on your part — it is a structural mismatch.

What happens with Stripe, PayPal, and Square

Account closed with zero notice, even if you're 100% compliant

Funds held for 90–180 days with no explanation

Chargebacks you can't fight — no dedicated account support

Volume caps at $5K–$20K/month — no room to scale

A CBD brand processing $30K/month through Stripe had their account frozen for 127 days with no explanation beyond a generic terms of service violation. They lost a supplier relationship and had to pause all ad spend while waiting for funds to release.

What CBD brands need is a dedicated merchant account underwritten by a U.S. acquiring bank that specifically supports hemp-derived products. As an ISO, InclusivePay places your business with the right banking partner for your category and manages the relationship so your account stays stable long term. Staying live

What Causes CBD Accounts to Fail After Approval

Getting approved is step one. Most CBD account problems that happen mid-operation are avoidable. Here is what causes them.

Chargeback rate above 1%

Visa and Mastercard both flag merchants above 1% for mandatory review. In CBD the most common causes are subscription billing confusion, billing descriptors customers don’t recognize, and delayed shipping. Keep chargebacks under 0.8% to stay well clear of the threshold.

Sudden volume spikes without notice

A promotional push or viral moment can triple your monthly volume overnight. Without advance notice to your processor, that spike looks like fraud to automated risk systems. If you’re scaling fast, tell us before it happens.

Outdated COAs

Most acquiring banks want COAs within 12 months. An expired COA on a live product is a compliance red flag during account reviews. Update them before they expire.

Adding new product categories without checking

Adding delta-8, THCA, or higher-THC products to a pure CBD account without updating your underwriting can trigger a review. Any meaningful change to what you sell should be run by your ISO first.

Health claims that creep back in

Processors conduct ongoing website monitoring. Language like “cures anxiety,” “treats inflammation,” or “works like a prescription” can trigger a review even if your original application was clean. Audit your content regularly.

The process

How the Application Process Works

Getting approved is not complicated when you work with someone who has done it hundreds of times.

1

Prepare your documents

LLC or business registration, government ID for all owners, 3–6 months of bank statements, COAs for all products, product labels, and a live compliant website with no health claims.

2

Apply with InclusivePay

No application fee. Pre-approval typically comes within 48–72 hours.

3

Underwriting

We do real underwriting before you start processing. Your acquiring bank knows exactly what you sell and has agreed to support it. This is what creates account stability.

4

Gateway setup

We set up your Authorize.Net or NMI gateway and connect it to your store via plugin or API.

5

Go live

Full setup in 5–7 business days with documents in order. Most merchants are taking payments within two weeks of applying.

6

Ongoing support

InclusivePay monitors your account, helps manage chargeback alerts, and stays available after approval. We do not disappear once you go live.

What if I was previously shut down by Stripe or PayPal?
A prior shutdown does not disqualify you. The important thing is to be upfront about your history during the application. Prior terminations for policy violations are common in CBD and do not prevent approval when handled correctly. If you were MATCH listed, there are still options depending on the reason.
Yes. Recurring billing and auto-ship models are fully supported. Subscription billing does carry higher chargeback risk in CBD, and we will walk you through how to structure your billing descriptors and cancellation policy to minimize disputes.
Delta-8, hemp flower, peptides, and nootropics. Each has different underwriting requirements. CBD is the most straightforward. Peptides and nootropics are restricted categories with additional requirements. Contact us to discuss your specific product catalog.
A Certificate of Analysis is a third-party lab report confirming your product’s cannabinoid content, including THC levels. Underwriters require COAs to confirm your products contain 0.3% THC or less and are compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill. COAs should be current — most banks want them within the last 12 months
No. Both Stripe and PayPal explicitly prohibit CBD and hemp products in their terms of service. Even if your account isn’t flagged immediately, it is vulnerable to termination at any time with no notice and no appeal. See our comparison of CBD-safe processors →
